Woyak Leads Sox Charge
Canterbury Baseball Club
by Sean Callahan 13 November 2005

Scott Woyak (2-0) pitched five-plus innings of two-hit ball and scored three runs to lead the new-look White Sox to a win over the Yankees, 7-3. Woyak struck out seven, while walking seven. He added two hits and four stolen bases from the batter's box. Joshua Batchelor went 2 for 4, with three RBIs.

Mark Harbott (1-1) completed his second game of the year, but was tagged with his first loss. Harbott surrendered seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and four walks. He struck out nine.

With three regulars missing, Andrew Peasey's White Sox had ring-ins at first, third and left field. Woyak never made them work hard, with no Yankee making it passed second base until the sixth inning.

The Sox got going in the first inning. Woyak singled, went to third on Peasey's ground out (we'll leave it to the reader to figure out how he got to second). Phillips walked, stole second and scored with Woyak on Batchelor's double.

The Yankees defense lapsed in the second, giving a way a number of outs. Jesse Norcliffe's error allowed Craig Murray to reach leading off the inning. Mike Bucher couldn't handle Jordan's grounder up the middle, which was graciously called a single. Harbott got Allen Hu on an infield fly, but Bucher tried to fool the Sox with a dropped catch and ended up throwing the ball out of play.

Woyak got drilled and made his usual move to second. Nicholas Batchelor looked Woyak back to second on Peasey's grounder, but then threw wide of first to allow Woyak to score and make it 5-0.

The Yankees held the Sox for the next three innings, as Harbott struck out seven of the next twelve batters, including the side in the fifth.

The Yankees offense finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, with a little help from Woyak, who walked five batters in the inning before being yanked for his battery mate. Despite the five walks, the Yankees only managed one run, as Nick Batchelor was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch. Steve Phillips walked in a second run before getting Chris Ballinger swinging to end the inning.

The Sox put another run across on singles by Woyak, Phillips and Josh Batchelor in the sixth to make it 7-2.

The Yankees tried to rally in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Phillips struck out Norcliffe for the second out, but then walked Hero Maeda to bring the potential tying run to the plate in Bucher. Phillips' first pitch was high, but Leigh Ryman strayed too far from third and was picked off to end the game.

Notes: The second game was suspended with the Angels up 7-1 in the bottom of the second inning due to rain and will be replayed on Thursday starting at 6PM.
