Chad Denny (1-1) settled down after a rough first inning and then proceeded to slam a pair of triples to lead the Mets to their first win of the season, defeating the Cardinals 16-8.
The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first despite getting no hits in the inning. Chris Ballinger (0-1) walked five and hit one, but Carl McIlroy was out in a run-down for the first out when he attempted to score from second on a wild pitch.
The Cardinals jumped all over Denny in the bottom of the first as Chad Edmund (single), Scott Woyak (double), Tony Haerewa (triple), and Joshua Batchelor (triple) crushed balls into the outfield, resulting in four runs and a 4-2 lead.
Ballinger settled in the second, retiring the side in order, while Denny worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the second.
Ballinger again worked a scoreless third, while Denny gave up an unearned run in the bottom, as the Cardinals increased their lead to 5-3.
In the top of the fourth, Ballinger surrendered a lead-off double to Andy Alsop, before getting Kunio Kamiya to fly out to center. Ballinger then walked three straight batters to to cut the lead to 5-3. Denny then slammed a 1-1 pitch to right for a bases-clearing triple and a 6-5 Mets lead.

Given another lead, Denny decided to keep it, retiring the next ten batters he faced until Kris Batchelor singled with one out in the seventh.
The Mets added five more in the fifth as the Cardinals sent three different pitchers to the hill trying to get three outs. Ballinger allowed a single and two more walks before being pulled with the bases loaded.
Josh Batchelor, trying to come back to the mound three hours after throwing 122 pitches in game one, struggled to find the plate, walking in three more runs around a strikeout before also being pulled.
Edmund came on and walked two more, but managed to get the final two outs of the inning with his team trailing 12-5.
The Mets added two more in the sixth, picking up two more walks and Denny getting his second triple of the day. They repeated the run scoring in the top of the seventh, getting three more walks, taking their total to 20 free passes for the day.
The Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the seventh, including two on Hero Maeda’s two-run home run, but in the end, Denny had his second complete game in as many weeks.

Notes: Players that have not paid their subs by game time on Sunday will be required to pay $15 for each game played so far, plus $15 for each game on Sunday.
