Stephen Phillips (2-0) re-wound a week and gave the Cardinals a dose of what he gave the Mets last Sunday, pitching a four-hitter, as the Padres won their fifth game, 6-1. To top it off, Phillips matched the entire Cardinals offensive output with a 4-4 day at the plate, raising his average to a statospheric .818, while his ERA dropped to 1.80.
While not as over-powering as last week when he struck out 14, Phillips was stingier with the hits, as only Nanuoko Taniguchi, Hero Maeda and Eric Cho (who had two) were able to muster base hits. Phillips walked five, struck out eight and hit one.
Eric Cho (0-1) was hung with the loss, despite facing just one more batter than Phillips, as the Cardinals ran themselves out of a few innings, in addition to leaving seven runners on base. Cho threw only 92 pitches in seven innings work, walking just one and striking out two.
The Padres scored three in the first, despite only one ball leaving the infield. Kunio Kamiya popped up on the first pitch, but the ball fell harmlessly for a single. Sean Callahan followed with a single to the hole, but the Cardinals had Kamiya trapped in a run-down but couldn't execute it. Phillips followed with a booming double to left and scored on consecutive groundouts to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals pulled one back in the bottom of the second, as Taniguchi singled home Cho with two outs.
It stayed that way until the sixth, as Cho faced just 14 batters in the second through fifth innings and Phillips did the same from the third through sixth.
The Padres had a chance to score in the fifth, as Kamiya reached on a one-out error and stole second base, but was caught in no-man's-land between third and home on Callahan's single to center for the second out. Callahan then got caught stealing third on a disputed tag.
The Padres did get some breathing room in the sixth, as Phillips singled , took third on an error and came home on Yoshimitsu Fuchigami's double. Makoto Saito's single brought home Fuchigami and then himself when Lei Zhang misplayed it into a three-base error.
Phillips shut the Cardinals down the rest of the way, with a little help from his defense. Scott Woyak was thrown out on a pitchout in the sixth on another disputed tag and then David Ballinger over-ran second for a 3-6 double play in the seventh. Phillips then blew three fastballs past Maeda to end the game.
Notes: The game was played in 1:38 - one of the shortest games ever in Canterbury.
