The Mets staved off elimination with a 14-10 win over the Padres in the afternoon game of the doubleheader. Sam Ballinger (3-2) picked up the win, while Sean Callahan (4-3) took the loss.
With visions of their game two weeks ago, when they blew a 9-1 lead, the Mets let the Padres back in the game with five errors in the sixth inning, as the Padres clawed back to two runs down.
The Mets decided not to repeat the gift, scoring three runs (two unearned) in the top of the sixth, two on Jesse Norcliffe's home run to right field. Norcliffe's HR was the third by the Mets in the game.
With the tying run on deck, Denny struck out Callahan to end it.
The Mets struck early with five in the first. Nick Prince tripled and Justin Holcroft and Chad Edmond doubled. Edmond's base running blunder eased the carnage, as he was picked off second for the second out.
Callahan settled in the second as the Mets gifted the Padres two runs on a hit batter, two errors and two passed balls, including a dropped third strike.
Edmond made up for the running mistake tripling in Chad Denny in the third, but the Padres pulled three back on Bowen Annandale's two-out triple and Jason Drost's RBI single.
The Mets came storming out in the fourth, as Leigh Ryman and Denny homered to make it 9-5.
The Padres gifted two more runs in the fifth, as the Callahan walked three and the Mets extended their lead to 11-5.
Notes: The Mets flashed the leather in the afternoon game (we'll conveniently ignore the sixth inning), Ryman making a fine catch in foul territory in the third and Prince making a nice catch in the fifth. James Chang made a couple of nice plays at third, including a 5-4 double play to end the first.
Leading 5-0 in the bottom of first, the Mets intentionally walked Yoshimitsu Fuchigami. The move paid off when Nicholas Batchelor grounded into an inning-ending double play.
